Dear Welling Church,
What do you do when you feel like you have reached a spiritual plateau?
Whether you’re a new believer or you have been walking with God for many years, we have all probably at one time or another felt like we have hit a spiritual “wall” in our life or ministry service. It can be exhilarating when you can clearly see God at work in your life or experience deep biblical growth, but what do you do if you’ve hit a spiritual dead end and don’t know how to get out of that rut?
During these times, don’t give up! Don’t lose sight or faith in God. God remains with us in the valleys as well as on the mountaintops. There is still room to grow, make progress, and witness the Lord’s continued work in your life. Many times, God uses these moments to wait on Him and focus on what’s most important.
Here are a few simple ways to help you break free from the spiritual doldrums and keep your spiritual walk fresh.
Attend a small group. Be around others who desire to follow God. Be encouraged by others as you learn and study the Bible.
Find a prayer partner. Grow deeper in prayer as you pray with someone else. Praying for others and their needs helps you see the bigger picture and broadens your ministry mindset.
Read biblically minded books. Deepen your understanding of God by reading a theology book, be inspired by other Christians and how God used believers in the past by reading biographies, or see your day from an eternal perspective by reading a daily devotional.
Fellowship or follow other Christians who desire spiritual growth. Birds of a feather flock together. As they grow, so will you. Develop friendships or learn from mature believers to help you stay on track.
Set spiritual goals for yourself. As the saying goes, aim at nothing and you will hit it every time. If you treat your spiritual walk haphazardly, don’t be surprised when it suffers. Set regular, measurable, and repeatable spiritual goals for yourself; whether it is reading through the Bible, sharing Christ with others, or praying more consistently or specifically.
Remain faithful. Trust God. Wait on Him. He will bless in due time. We all have room to improve, so keep going and keep growing.
Colossians 2:6-7
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
