/Update From Your Pastors
Dear Welling Church family,
It’s nearly here! Christmas is just a few weeks away.
Soon, you won’t be able to visit a shopping centre without having your ears bent with Christmas music. It’s that time of year to break out “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney or “Last Christmas” by Wham. But seriously, with most Christmas songs or carols, many people won’t even be aware of what the music or lyrics are actually about or think about their real meaning.
That’s unfortunate really, because Christmas celebrates one of the most incredible events in all of human history. In the book of Isaiah, originally written 700 years before Jesus was born, it says:
Isaiah 9:6-7
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
The prophecy written in Isaiah along with many other passages in the Bible references the greatest historical event in the world: God becoming man and installing an unending kingdom of peace. It’s beyond epic.
What makes this even more impressive is that God didn’t come as a conquering king or an oppressive tyrant. He came as a humble servant to reconcile our broken relationship with God.
Christmas is a time when we give and receive presents from family and friends, but the first Christmas saw the giving of a gift that surpasses any gift you’ll receive during any Christmas. It saw the Saviour of the world emptying Himself of His riches to enrich everyone who bows their knee to Him as their king by offering His salvation.
This year, don’t miss out on the real reason why God sent His only Son Jesus Christ on that very first Christmas.
